Making Sure the Pond Actually Holds Water

The most common pond failure in Florida is simple: it won't hold water. Sandy soil drains like a sieve, and a pond dug above the water table in the wrong ground empties out between rains. We check soil and water-table conditions before the first bucket of dirt moves, so we know going in whether a pond will fill naturally or needs help.

Where the ground won't hold on its own, we compact the bottom or bring in and key a clay liner so the water stays put. Where the dig reaches the water table, the pond becomes a wet pond that fills and holds naturally. Either way, we shape stable banks and tie any overflow into the surrounding stormwater drainage so a heavy summer storm doesn't blow out the edge.

How much does it cost to dig a pond in Florida?

Pond cost is driven by size and depth — the more dirt we move, the more it costs — plus soil and water-table conditions and where the spoil goes. A small backyard or wildlife pond is a modest job; a large ranch or irrigation pond runs higher. We quote every pond after walking the site.

How deep can you dig a pond here?

It depends on the water table and soil. In much of Southwest Florida the water table is high, so many ponds become wet ponds once you dig below it. We check conditions on-site and shape the depth and slopes to match how you want to use the pond — fishing, irrigation, livestock, or aesthetics.

Will my new pond hold water, or will it just drain away?

That comes down to soil and the water table. Where the soil is sandy and won't hold on its own, we compact the bottom or bring in and line it with clay so it holds. Where the dig reaches the water table, the pond fills and stays wet naturally. We assess this before we dig so there are no surprises.

What do you do with all the dirt you dig out?

Usually we place and grade it right on the property — built into a berm, a raised pad, or higher usable ground — which saves you the cost of hauling it off. If you'd rather have it removed, we can haul it off instead. We'll talk through the options when we quote the job.
